5 THINGS | 1 Bridge, 1 Motorcycle, 1 Queen, 1 Mask & 1 Batman

5 THINGS is an occasional showcase of five things from around WestVirginiaVille worth seeing or seeing again.

Here’s an exquisite photograph by Sarah Coleman of the New River Gorge Bridge in Fayetteville WV, that manages in a single glance to capture the bridge’s heroic architecture and West Virginia’s misty morning grandeur. See more of her work at Sarah Coleman Photography. And on Facebook at this link. We were smitten by this image after encountering it on the West Virginia Scenery/Landscape Photography Facebook page.

Here’s ‘A Still Life with Waffle House and Black Motorcycle.’ (You just don’t see a lot of those.) We shot this along US Route 60 in Cabell County WV one June day in 2020.

Artwork by Sharon Lynn Stackpole

Here’s a timely ink and watercolor painting by Sharon Lynn Stackpole, titled “The Queen Has a Heart.” Sharon is a clinical mental health counseling graduate student at Marshall University, a disability advocate, artist and writer. And a really fine artist. This is from a series she has underway inspired by a deck of playing cards. See more of her work at sharonlyn.com and also in the Summer 2016 issue of Longridge Review.

We were so taken with this frilled homemade mask a friend made for this salesclerk at a Cabell County liquor store that we asked to take her photograph. Her name is Angie Whalen and we nominate hers for the coolest mask in Cabell County—so far. We were maintaining CDC-safe practices—you can see the reflection of the hanging Plexiglass frame between her and us.

Here’s an outtake from our recent video shoot, “This Is Not Your Average Ice Cream Truck Story.” At one of the neighborhood stops in Cabell County, WV, Batman awaited. Batman even has a fully functioning Batmobile as part of John Buckland’s Heroes For Hire non-profit. He offers event and hospital visits, community and crisis response, bereavment and support for terminally ill kids and more. Batman and Jacob are buddies.

PS: The ice cream truck video has gone mini-viral since we first uploaded it at 9 p.m., on Friday, July 17, 2020. In 24 hours, it amassed more than 30,000 views on Facebook and nearly 700 shares, last we looked. The video still has a ways to go to catch up to our last mini-viral production, “What Needs to be Said About George Floyd’s Murder,” which featured T.C. Clemons speaking truth to the nation. That has been viewed more than 130,000 times on Facebook, Youtube and WestVirginiaVille.com, and shared almost 2,500 times. We don’t do these videos for the numbers, but it is always nice to see one ripple through the social mediaverse.
