Mary Sanders by Mary Sanders | watercolor

HOW: A watercolor “self portrait” made while starring at self in the bathroom mirror. At first, I was disappointed in the lack of resemblance. Now, I believe it did capture something about how I felt as I looked at myself.

WHO: I am a daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, lawyer and artist. Each role is different but all make up the image which looks at me from the mirror and then becomes translated on paper.

THE SERIES: Because of the potential number of entries we can’t reply to all or assure yours will be used, but WestVirginiaVille  welcomes submissions to this occasional ‘SelfPortraiture‘ series (when enough are in hand, they’ll be turned into a video slideshow). Include what you see above: a paragraph of background on the portrait (including the medium and occasion for the piece), plus a paragraph of background on yourself and any web links to other work by you. You should be a resident of WestVirginiaVille or have some connection to the commonwealth.

HOW TO SUBMIT: E-mail us a single artful (or in-artful but cool) self-portrait of your face PLUS a separate regular photo of your face. Self-portraits welcome in oils, watercolor, photo, chiseled in stone, quilted, embroidered, undressed (with style), tattooed, frescoed, collaged, photocopied, craquelured, smudge sticked (I’m running through my Photoshop filter list now), bas-reliefed. Etc. Even animated.

DEADLINE: March 1, 2011.

Very nice. Self portraits are so tough. Your work is great. Wonderful.
