Appalachia Today blog blossoms forth

Becky Kimmons’ smart new blog, Appalachia Today, has come forth onto the Web, and not a moment too soon. We need a Transcendent New Nation of Appalachia. But what/where is Appalachia and how the heck do you pronounce it? Kimmons writes:

It’s arguable that the Transcendent New Nation of Appalachia knows no boundaries, but we’re laying claim to lands we feel entitled to historically, geographically, or psychically.

The Transcendent New Nation takes in the vast system of mountains in eastern North America that includes the mysterious Atlantic Coast Uplands and Eastern Newfoundland Atlantic; the Maritime Acadian Highlands, Maritime Plain, Notre Dame and Megantic Mountains that include the Chic-Chocs; the Western Newfoundland Mountains; the Piedmont, Blue Ridge, and Valley and Ridge Mountains in the Eastern United States; the Saint Lawrence Valley; the Appalachian Plateaus featuring lands commonly perceived as Appalachia; the New England Province that takes in western portions of Connecticut; the Lower Hudson Valley and on into New Jersey; western Pennsylvania and portions of eastern Pennsylvania ending abruptly in Berks County.
